Pitt

In contrast to the loathsome old leftie , would-be tyrant and enemy of freedom I posted upon below , I was put in mind of our greatest statesman , William Pitt the Younger by this quotation over at Archbishop Cranmer's excellent site .
‘Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom: it is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.’

William Pitt 1759-1806
Speech, Hansard 18 November 1783, col. 1209

When can we have principled politicians back ? Perhaps rotten boroughs weren't that bad an idea , after all ?

Or is it the existence of rigidly-controlled political parties which causes the dearth of intelligent , patriotic politics ?

We will be able to tell by the progression of Daniel Hannan and Douglas Carswell , or lack of it .
